Today I grabbed a shirt from my closet that I’ve owned for quite a while but had never worn. In my rush to make it to physical therapy on time, I slipped it on and headed out the door. After physical therapy, I went to my nail appointment. As I walked in, my nail technician stopped me and said, “Mrs. Debbie, wait a minute!” She reached behind me, found the price tag still attached to my shirt, and said, “Hold up, I’ll get my scissors!”
I laughed and said, “Well, I guess I’m advertising that I have new clothes!”
As funny as it was, it got me thinking about another tag I’ve chosen to wear many times—a cross necklace.
When children play the game Tag, one person is “it.” They run around touching others and declaring, “Tag, you’re it!” The game instantly transfers a responsibility to the next player.
As Christians, we’ve been tagged too.
The cross we wear isn’t just jewelry. It’s a visible reminder of the incredible price Jesus paid to purchase our freedom from sin and death.
The Apostle Paul wrote:
“For God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:20 NLT)
Every price tag tells a story of value. The tag on my shirt revealed what someone paid for it. The cross reveals what Jesus paid for us. Not with silver or gold, but with His own precious blood.
“For you know that God paid a ransom to save you… It was not paid with mere gold or silver… It was the precious blood of Christ.” (1 Peter 1:18-19 NLT)
When someone notices the cross around our neck, perhaps it’s an invitation. A chance to tell them about the One who loved us enough to give His life for ours.
In a sense, when we put on that cross, we’re saying, “Tag, you’re it!” We have been tagged by God’s grace and commissioned to share His love with others.
The next time you fasten a cross necklace around your neck, remember: you’re wearing more than jewelry. You’re displaying the price Jesus paid for your redemption. You’re carrying a testimony. You’re wearing a tag that points to the Savior.
And who knows? Someone may notice it and ask why you wear it.
That’s when you can smile and tell them about the greatest purchase ever made.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for paying the price I could never pay. Thank You for purchasing my freedom through Your sacrifice on the cross. Help me never to take that gift for granted. When others see the cross I wear, let it become an opportunity to share Your love and salvation. Tag me today, Lord, and send me wherever You desire so others may come to know You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
