“My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music with all my soul.” —Psalm 108:1

I understand what it feels like to face a battle that doesn’t end quickly. For years, I have dealt with pain and tightness throughout the right side of my body. I have seen doctors, undergone testing and surgery, tried therapy, and searched for answers. Some things have helped, but no one has been able to completely explain or remove the pain.

I wish I could say that I have always faced it with a steadfast heart, but I haven’t. There have been days when I felt discouraged, frustrated, and simply tired of trying to figure it all out. Yet again and again, God has drawn my heart back to Him.

I am learning that being steadfast does not mean I never struggle. It means that in the middle of the struggle, I keep returning to what I know: God loves me, God is faithful, and God is still with me.

David understood what it meant to face a battle that was not yet over. Yet Psalm 108 begins with praise. That opening reveals something important: praise was not a response to an easy life or a guaranteed victory. It was the expression of a heart anchored in God before the battle was over.

David didn’t begin by describing the enemy, reviewing everything that could go wrong, or trying to determine whether he had enough strength to win. Instead, he declared, “My heart is steadfast.” David’s praise flowed from a settled decision to trust God, even while circumstances remained uncertain.

A steadfast heart is not a heart that never feels afraid, discouraged, or uncertain. It is a heart that has decided where it will stand. David steadied his heart by remembering God’s love, faithfulness, authority, and promises.

David honestly admitted that human help was not enough. That doesn’t mean there is no value in seeking help from others. It means that people have limits, and only God can do what only God can do.

David ended the psalm with this confident declaration: “With God we will gain the victory.”

Notice that he said with God. David would still have to move forward and face the battle, but he would not face it alone. God would provide the strength, guidance, and courage he needed.

Sometimes God changes our circumstances, and sometimes He steadies us while we are still walking through them. Victory may not always look like the immediate removal of the battle. Sometimes victory is being able to say, “This is hard, but I will not face it without God.”

Whatever you are facing today, turn your attention away from the size of the battle and toward the greatness of your God. You can praise Him before you see the answer and trust Him while the battle is still before you.

With God, you can move forward with a steadfast heart.

Prayer

Father, when my circumstances feel uncertain, help me steady my heart in You. Remind me of Your love, faithfulness, authority, and promises. Keep me from relying only on human strength or my own understanding. I choose to praise You before I see the answer and trust You as I walk through this battle. With You, I can move forward with a steadfast heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
