Dedicated to my husband, Mike, who unknowingly reminded me that God often teaches profound spiritual truths through the ordinary things of life.
Recently, Mike explained to me what a fault line really is. I had always connected fault lines with earthquakes, but I didn’t understand that a fault line is actually a fracture in the earth where enormous sections of rock meet.
Most of the time, you can’t even see it.
Life continues as usual while pressure quietly builds beneath the surface. Then, when the pressure becomes too great, the earth suddenly shifts.
As he explained it, I couldn’t help but think about relationships.
Isn’t that often how marriages, families, and friendships work?
We don’t usually drift apart because of one conversation. Pressure builds over time through unspoken hurts, unmet expectations, impatience, and unforgiveness until something small triggers an emotional earthquake.
Then another thought came to me.
How quickly we begin looking for each other’s faults.
Jesus addressed this very tendency when He asked,
“Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”
Matthew 7:3
It’s much easier to identify someone else’s faults than to acknowledge the hidden fractures in our own hearts.
David understood this. He didn’t pray, “Lord, search my spouse.”
He prayed,
“Search me, O God, and know my heart… See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalm 139:23–24
Perhaps the greatest prayer we can pray is not, “Lord, change them,” but “Lord, reveal the fault lines in me before they become earthquakes in my relationships.”
The good news is this:
Fault lines reveal where something has been broken, but they do not have the final word.
Jesus does.
He alone can heal what sin has fractured and restore what pressure has damaged.
When our lives are built on Christ, we discover that although the ground around us may shake, our Foundation never will.
Prayer
Father, search my heart before I search someone else’s. Reveal the hidden fault lines within me and replace criticism with compassion, pride with humility, and impatience with grace. Help me become quick to forgive, slow to judge, and eager to love as You have loved me. Build my life upon Christ, the solid Rock who never moves. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
