Have you ever stopped to think about how amazing your heart really is?
Your physical heart is about the size of your fist, yet it beats around 100,000 times every single day without you giving it a second thought. It faithfully pumps life-giving blood through nearly 60,000 miles of blood vessels, delivering oxygen and nutrients to every cell in your body. When your heart is healthy, your entire body benefits.
When your heart is unhealthy, eventually every part of your body is affected.
Isn’t it interesting that God chose the heart as the picture of our spiritual life as well?
The Bible mentions the heart hundreds of times, but most of those references aren’t talking about the muscle inside our chest. They describe the very center of who we are—our thoughts, desires, motives, will, and affections.
The heart is the place from which our lives flow.
No wonder Solomon wrote,
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Proverbs 4:23
Everything.
Our words.
Our attitudes.
Our choices.
Our relationships.
Our worship.
Our obedience.
Everything flows from the heart.
Recently I noticed a bottle of oregano spray on my shelf. The word “Immunity” seemed to leap off the label.
It made me stop and think.
Our immune system works around the clock, quietly protecting us from things that don’t belong in our bodies. It recognizes harmful invaders and works tirelessly to defend us.
What if we were just as intentional about protecting our spiritual hearts?
Jesus warned us about what enters our hearts.
The writer of Hebrews warned us about allowing bitterness to take root.
Paul warned us not to let anger linger.
Fear, pride, envy, unforgiveness, greed, lust, and anxiety all try to find a home in our hearts. Left unchecked, they don’t remain hidden. They eventually affect the way we think, speak, and live.
Just as our physical bodies need a healthy immune system, our spiritual lives need hearts continually surrendered to Christ.
That doesn’t mean every sickness is caused by stress or sin. Scripture never teaches that. Faithful believers become sick just as faithful believers grow old. We live in a broken world awaiting complete restoration.
But Scripture does teach that our inner life matters.
A heart filled with God’s peace responds differently than a heart ruled by fear.
A heart filled with forgiveness carries a lighter burden than one weighed down by resentment.
A heart anchored in hope walks differently than one overwhelmed by despair.
The healthier our spiritual hearts become, the more the fruit of the Spirit becomes evident in our lives.
Perhaps that’s why David prayed,
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
Psalm 51:10
David didn’t ask God to merely improve his circumstances.
He asked God to transform his heart.
And then there is one more truth that changes everything.
Our physical hearts are not truly our own.
Neither are our spiritual hearts.
The apostle Paul reminds us:
“You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Jesus purchased us with His own blood.
That means these bodies are no longer ours to abuse or neglect. They are temples of the Holy Spirit, entrusted to our care. We honor Him by caring for our physical health as wisely as we can—not because we worship our bodies, but because we worship the One who created and redeemed them.
And we honor Him by continually inviting Him to search our spiritual hearts.
The more I think about it, perhaps the heart of the matter really is this:
A healthy physical heart can add years to our life.
But a heart fully surrendered to Jesus gives life to our years.
So today, let’s ask the Great Physician to examine both.
May He give us wisdom to care for the bodies He has entrusted to us, and even more importantly, may He continually cleanse, strengthen, and fill our hearts with His love.
Because when Jesus has our heart…
He truly has the heart of the matter.
Prayer
Father, thank You for creating me so wonderfully. Thank You for the heart that faithfully beats within my chest and for the spiritual heart through which I love, trust, worship, and follow You. Search me and know my heart. Reveal anything that does not belong there, and by Your Spirit replace it with love, joy, peace, and steadfast faith. Help me to remember that I was bought with the precious blood of Jesus and that I am not my own. Teach me to honor You with both my body and my heart. May everything that flows from my life point others to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
