Recently, my husband and I were abruptly awakened in the middle of the night by our house fire alarm system.

Needless to say, we jumped out of bed quickly, searching and sniffing through the house trying to figure out what was wrong while also attempting to stop the piercing alarm.

Meanwhile, our rabbit and cats were completely panicked.

Honestly, none of us recovered quickly from it.

Thankfully, after investigating, we discovered it was a false alarm apparently triggered by the strong peppermint oil scent coming from our aqua purification machine.

But as relieved as we were, the experience made me think about another kind of alarm — the kind that goes off in our hearts when bad news suddenly enters our lives.

Some alarms in life are false.

Others are painfully real.

A diagnosis.

A betrayal.

A financial setback.

A prodigal child.

A heartbreaking accusation.

A shattered dream.

A loss we never expected.

When those alarms sound, our souls can feel just like our frightened pets that night — shaken, anxious, confused, and unable to settle down quickly.

Yet the Bible is filled with people who received devastating news and somehow kept going forward by faith.

Job Heard Alarm After Alarm

In one terrible day, Job lost his livestock, servants, and even his children.

“When Job arose, he tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground and worshiped.”

— Job 1:20

Job grieved deeply, but he did not stop turning toward God.

Nehemiah Received Heartbreaking News

Nehemiah heard that Jerusalem’s walls were broken down and its gates burned with fire.

“When I heard these things, I sat down and wept.”

— Nehemiah 1:4

But Nehemiah did not stay frozen in despair.

He prayed.

He fasted.

Then he got up and rebuilt.

Mary Received Troubling News

When the angel appeared to Mary, the news she received would completely alter her life forever.

Though highly favored, she would face misunderstanding, hardship, and sorrow.

Yet Mary responded:

“Be it unto me according to thy word.”

— Luke 1:38

Faith does not always remove fear, but it helps us surrender to God in the middle of it.

Jesus Received the Worst News of All

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus fully understood the suffering that awaited Him at the cross.

The weight was so heavy that He sweat drops like blood.

Yet He prayed:

“Not my will, but thine, be done.”

— Luke 22:42

Jesus kept going because He trusted the Father beyond the pain.

So How Do We Keep Going?

1. We Bring Our Alarmed Hearts to God

God never asks us to pretend we are okay.

Psalm 34:18 says:

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

2. We Remember That Fear Is Not Our Master

Alarming situations may shake us, but they do not have authority over God.

Isaiah 41:10 says:

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God.”

3. We Move Forward One Step at a Time

Sometimes faith is not running.

Sometimes faith is simply getting out of bed, praying one prayer, making one phone call, or taking one more step forward.

Galatians 6:9 reminds us:

“Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

4. We Trust That God Is Still Present

Even when the alarm is real…

Even when the outcome hurts…

Even when answers do not come quickly…

God is still faithful.

The disciples panicked during a violent storm while Jesus was in the boat with them all along.

The storm alarmed them, but Heaven was not alarmed.

Jesus simply spoke:

“Peace, be still.”

— Mark 4:39

And He still speaks peace today.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Sometimes life alarms us deeply. Bad news can shake our hearts, steal our peace, and leave us feeling overwhelmed. Thank You that Your Word shows us we are not alone. Help us remember that even in frightening moments, You are near. Teach us to trust You when the alarms sound loudly in our lives. Give us courage to keep moving forward in faith, one step at a time. Speak peace over every troubled heart today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
