“Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? I fix my eyes on God—soon I’ll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He’s my God.”
— Psalm 42:5 (MSG)
The other day I read this verse and found myself lingering over one phrase:
“He puts a smile on my face.”
What a beautiful thought.
I love to smile at people. Whether I’m in a grocery store, at church, or walking through a parking lot, I often offer a smile to those I pass. Yet many times, the smile is not returned. Sometimes people look away. Sometimes they seem lost in thought. Sometimes their faces carry the weight of a burden I cannot see.
For a moment I wondered, Why don’t they smile back?
Then this verse answered my question.
Perhaps many people are simply carrying more than we know.
Perhaps their eyes are fixed on life’s disappointments, worries, hurts, losses, fears, doctor’s reports, financial struggles, broken relationships, or unanswered prayers. When our gaze remains fixed on the storms around us, it becomes difficult to smile.
But the psalmist discovered something life-changing. He didn’t deny his sadness. He didn’t pretend everything was fine. Instead, he asked himself why he was downcast and then intentionally turned his eyes toward God.
When he shifted his focus, hope returned.
And with hope came a smile.
I thought about my favorite recliner. When I’m tired and finally sink into it after a long day, my whole body seems to smile. I relax. I rest. The tension leaves my shoulders.
Jesus offers something even better.
He invites weary souls to rest in Him.
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28
When we come to Jesus, our circumstances may not change immediately, but our hearts begin to. His presence brings comfort. His promises bring hope. His love reminds us we are not alone.
Maybe that’s why one of the greatest gifts we can give others is a smile.
Not a fake smile.
Not a forced smile.
But the genuine smile that comes from knowing Jesus is still on the throne, still in control, and still working all things together for good.
“A cheerful look brings joy to the heart.”
— Proverbs 15:30
You never know who may need that smile today. It may be the only glimpse of encouragement someone receives.
And if your own heart feels heavy today, remember the psalmist’s words. Lift your eyes from your problems to your Savior. Sit for a while in the presence of the One who says, “Come to Me.”
You may discover that before long, He has done exactly what He promised.
He puts a smile on your face.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, when my heart is downcast and weary, help me lift my eyes to You. Teach me to find my rest in Your presence rather than in my circumstances. Fill my heart with Your peace, Your joy, and Your hope. Let the smile You place on my face become a blessing to others who are struggling. Help me share Your kindness everywhere I go and remind me that even on difficult days, You are my God and my salvation. Amen.
