“A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children.”
— Proverbs 13:22
When we hear the word inheritance, we often think of money, property, or possessions passed down. But Scripture reminds us that the richest inheritance is not always measured in dollars—it is measured in faith.
I have been reading “The Legacy Life” a devotional by David Green, founder and CEO of Hobby Lobby.
He basically shares his rags to riches story but it is definitely a life lived by faith in God and not faith in possessions!
I am sure many would love to be on the inheriting end of David Green.
Yet, as I read his story it reminds me of my mother. I am thankful for the rich legacy I inherited through her. She did not leave behind great financial wealth. In her later years, she lived on Social Security benefits, managing a modest income with wisdom and humility. Yet what she left me and my siblings is a heritage so rich that no account could ever contain it.
She left us a living faith—one that trusted God fully, obeyed Him quietly, and watched Him work miracles along the way. That faith has sustained me, guided me, and carried me through seasons where only God could make a way.
My mother was a shining light, no matter what her hands were doing. Whether she was running a small fruit and vegetable stand by the side of the road or operating two well-established businesses at the Florida–Alabama state line, she lived with integrity. She managed her life, her finances, and her responsibilities in ways that honored God. She worked hard, loved deeply, and trusted the Lord completely.
She was, in every sense, a Proverbs 31 woman—strong, capable, generous, and God-fearing. Her worth was far above rubies, and her life reflected that truth daily.
Because of her example, I understand now that true wealth is not what we accumulate, but what we pass on. It is faith lived out in ordinary moments. It is character shaped in quiet obedience. It is light that shines no matter the task at hand.
My prayer is that this spiritual legacy will not stop with me—that my son, and his children, and their children after them will continue walking in this living faith. A faith that trusts God. A faith that honors Him. A faith that leaves a lasting inheritance for generations to come.
A bigger God , I will never find and a finer mother, for me, there has never been.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the gift of godly legacy. Help me to steward the faith that has been entrusted to me, and to pass it on faithfully to the generations that follow. May our inheritance be one that honors You and reflects Your glory. Amen.
