Scripture: 2 Chronicles 1:1–17
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
—Matthew 6:33
Solomon had been given an enormous responsibility. He was now king of Israel, leading the very people God had chosen as His own. Solomon established himself firmly over the kingdom, spoke to the people, went to the place of worship, inquired of God, and presented offerings before Him.
Then God appeared to Solomon and said, “Ask for whatever you want Me to give you.”
Can you imagine being given that opportunity?
Solomon could have asked for greater wealth, a longer life, victory over his enemies, or freedom from every difficulty. Instead, he asked God for wisdom and knowledge so that he could lead God’s people well.
Solomon’s request revealed what was most important to his heart. He understood that the position God had given him was not merely about enjoying power—it was about faithfully serving the people entrusted to him.
His request also revealed what was important to God.
God values wisdom.
God values humble dependence.
God values faithful leadership.
God values hearts that care about His people.
God values those who recognize that they cannot fulfill their calling without Him.
Because Solomon asked for wisdom and knowledge rather than riches, possessions, honor, or personal victory, God granted his request. Then, in His generosity, God also gave Solomon wealth, riches, and honor beyond that of the kings before or after him.
This does not mean that God promises material wealth whenever we make the right request. It means that God sees the motives of our hearts. He knows what we need to accomplish His purposes, but He also understands the personal desires, burdens, and concerns we carry.
God is not indifferent to what matters to us.
Jesus said that our heavenly Father already knows what we need. He invites us to seek His kingdom first—not because everything else is unimportant, but because putting Him first brings everything else into its proper place.
Every day, we are leading someone. We may lead a family, a business, a ministry, a team, or simply influence the people God places along our path. Like Solomon, we need more than our own knowledge and ability. We need wisdom from God.
Perhaps our prayer should not begin with, “Lord, make my life easier,” but with:
“Lord, give me what I need to serve You faithfully.”
God may not give us everything we want, but we can trust Him with everything that matters to us. He knows our responsibilities, our dreams, our financial needs, our health concerns, and the desires we have not spoken aloud. When our hearts are centered on what matters to Him, we can rest in knowing that what matters to us is already seen by Him.
A Step for Today
Before presenting your list of needs to God, ask Him:
“Father, what do I need today to represent You well and care for the people You have entrusted to me?”
Then tell Him honestly what matters to you, trusting that the God who heard Solomon also sees, hears, and cares for you.
Prayer
Father, thank You for caring about every detail of my life. Give me wisdom and knowledge to handle the responsibilities You have entrusted to me. Help me seek Your kingdom before my own comfort and choose what is important to You. I surrender my needs, desires, and concerns into Your hands, knowing that what matters to me also matters to You. Give me what I need to serve You and others faithfully today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Remember: When we make God’s priorities our priorities, we can trust Him with everything that matters to us.
