We Don’t Even Have A Clue!

“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”
Psalm 139:14
We look in the mirror every day and see what God made on the outside. But have you ever stopped to think about everything He made on the inside?
Truthfully, we don’t even have a clue!
Our hearts beat thousands of times each day without us telling them to. Our lungs breathe, our kidneys filter, our digestive system processes, and our immune system works to protect us.
Billions of nerve cells in our brains communicate through electrical and chemical signals, allowing us to think, remember, move, speak and feel.
And all of this is happening right now.
You didn’t have to remind your heart to beat while you were reading this.
God designed it that way.
But perhaps there is another “inside” that we understand even less.
We know the thoughts that rise into our conscious minds, but there may be memories, learned responses, fears, assumptions and patterns influencing us that we don’t immediately recognize.
But God does.
David begins Psalm 139 by saying:
“O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.”
Psalm 139:1
God knows what is happening inside our bodies, but He also knows what is happening inside our hearts.
He knows what we know about ourselves—and what we don’t.
He knows why certain things hurt us so deeply. He knows the source of fears we don’t understand. He knows our motives, our memories, our thoughts and every hidden place of our hearts.
And if there is something hidden within us that we need to recognize, God is able to bring it into the light.
Maybe that’s one reason David could end this beautiful psalm with such a courageous prayer:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:”
“And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalm 139:23–24
Think about that!
At the beginning David says, “You have searched me.”
At the end David says, “Search me.”
He wasn’t afraid of being completely known by God. He invited God into the places within himself that perhaps even David couldn’t see.
Maybe being fearfully and wonderfully made isn’t only about marveling at our heartbeat, our brain, our cells or our physical bodies.
Perhaps it should also remind us that our Creator understands the deepest parts of us better than we ever could.
We don’t have to figure ourselves out completely.
We can ask the One who made us to search us.
Lord, You know every part of me—the parts I understand and the parts I don’t. Search my heart. If there is anything hidden within me that You want me to recognize, lovingly bring it into Your light. Heal what needs healing, correct what needs correcting, and lead me in the way everlasting. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works! Amen.
