Yesterday after our big Thanksgiving meal, I walked back into the kitchen, looked at all the dishes still piled high, and whispered under my breath, “We have way too much food.”

And right after I said it, another thought landed in my spirit:

When we have way too much food… we often end up weighing too much.

Not in a judgmental way. Not in a shame-filled way.

But in a holy reminder kind of way.

The truth is, our culture celebrates abundance—especially at the holidays. Seconds, thirds, desserts, leftovers, and then leftovers of the leftovers. And yet, in the middle of all that blessing, God gently reminds us:

Your body was bought at a price. Honor Me with it.

(1 Corinthians 6:20)

Jesus paid for my salvation with His own life.

He redeemed not just my soul, but my body too.

And when I overeat—when I treat my body carelessly instead of sacredly—it’s not just about calories. It’s about stewardship.

The issue isn’t the food.

The issue is the heart behind it.

Am I using food to comfort me instead of letting Jesus comfort me?

Am I eating mindlessly instead of gratefully?

Am I treating my body like a temporary container… or a temple purchased by Christ?

Thanksgiving reminded me that we can enjoy the feast, but we don’t have to lose ourselves in it. We don’t have to worship the table. We don’t have to say yes to everything simply because it’s there. We can practice holy restraint—not to be skinny, but to be surrendered.

Gratitude doesn’t mean overindulgence.

Gratitude means receiving what is needed…

and honoring God with how we live afterward.

So today, I’m thankful:

for food,

for family,

for abundance,

but most of all, for the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit nudging me back to balance, stewardship, and self-control.

And I pray that every bite I take—from now through the holidays—will reflect a heart that wants to honor Jesus, who paid so much for me.

Scripture

“You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” — 1 Corinthians 6:20

Prayer

Lord, thank You for every blessing You place before me—even a table overflowing with food. Teach me to enjoy Your gifts without overindulging. Help me remember that my body belongs to You and was purchased at a great price. Give me wisdom, discipline, and a heart that desires to honor You in all things, even in how I eat. Amen.
