Scripture:

“If anyone boasts, ‘I love God,’ and goes right on hating his brother or sister, thinking nothing of it, he is a liar. If he won’t love the person he can see, how can he love the God he can’t see? The command we have from Christ is blunt: Loving God includes loving people. You’ve got to love both.”

— 1 John 4:20-21 (MSG)

There’s something beautifully challenging about this verse. It brings love out of the clouds and plants it right in front of us—in people. Not perfect people, not always easy people, but the very ones God allows into our path each day.

Many years ago, my favorite song was “Let Your Love Flow” sung by the Bellamy Brothers.

Everytime I heard it, I felt hope of one day, “finding love. “ I thought love was a feeling. A feeling for someone or something. And I had high hopes of finding that feeling with someone very special.

Now many years later I realize “God is Love”! Love is not a feeling! It’s a person! I am made in God’s image therefore it must be possible for me to love as he has loved me, unconditional.

Seems impossible, believe me I know. I’ve had some pretty challenging situations in my life and most of them were because of people that I wanted to love me who, come to find out, didn’t!đŸ„Č

The words, “ I love you”, are thrown around words we use to say how we feel at the moment about a certain someone in our lives. Then perhaps that “feeling” changes. Then we throw out the words that seem to hurt more than any we can ever hear
” I never loved you”!

Oh how dreadful those words can make our hearts feel💔!

And it’s even easy to say, “I love God.” But God’s measuring stick is how we treat the ones He made. Loving people is sometimes messy. It means forgiving when you’d rather stay hurt, listening when you’d rather defend, and choosing grace over gossip. It’s the kind of love that costs you something—but it’s the same love that cost Jesus everything.

When we love the people we can see—the ones in our homes, our families, our circles—we’re actually loving the God we can’t see. Every act of kindness, every bit of patience, every time we choose peace over pride, we’re reflecting His heart.

So today, let’s ask the Holy Spirit to help us love the visible faces around us with the invisible strength of Christ’s love. Because when His love flows through us, beauty shines brighter than any makeup, glow drink, or good day ever could. 💕
